Winter Trail Run Series
21K - February 21, 2009
Post race - the Final Story.
Was it better than going to
Disneyland, or what! The nice cool dry weather brought out the best in
everyone, a certain magic in the air you might say. Funny how 126 runners
started and we had 127 finishers… maybe someone from 2 weeks ago got back
in the race! My new well- schooled finish line crew did magic, amazing
what you can do with good people. No news on my mates who had to return
home after the race started, fingers crossed all is well with Bill. Must
thank our Forest Service mate, Tony, who drove them back to their car in
SJC.
(Baz's Sunday morning UPDATE
on Bill Johnson: "My mate Bill is fine. Did go to the hospital and get
checked out... Heart was ok... All good.")
Yes, it was the final race
in our 09 WTRS. Many runners I know would like it to continue through the
year, but many said it was just right. Every race was a winner, although
these winter conditions will have to improve before 2010. The sunshine
did screw up a couple of runners. They went out too hard and the tough
course repaid them in no uncertain terms… Hey that is all part of the
learning curve. Kevin Gillotti, his name sounds like a racing driver not
a runner, but he came across that finish line looking pretty good. I
asked him if he was being pushed by anyone, he said a tall bloke gave him
plenty going up to the first aid station, but from the bottom of Horse
Thief he ran strong to the top and then ran on his own the rest of the
way. I am sure Horse Thief got to many of you… but everyone finished.
Dean Dobberteen followed Kevin by 3 minutes and was full of praise for the
winner. 50 year-old Jeff Wong came in third overall and felt the whole
series has helped with his race plans. I predicted a woman would be top
ten, but my money was not on Shannon Waegner. She has so improved since I
met her and missing the last race seemed to spur her on. Being only 13
minutes behind the over all winner was something she didn’t expect, go
Shannon! Laura Knight was only a minute and 23 seconds behind to take
second and 42 year-old Sharon L’Heureux ran great to take 3rd.
All the age group winners where happy receiving their medals and getting
their photo taken with that cheap camera! Must thank me ole mate
Doug Malewicki. He posts all the info for this web site and feels he has finally
finished all the Big BAZ race info. He will be rewarded… in kind.
I do really thank all the
series runners over the last couple of months, without your input at the
races I just wouldn’t be able to do my job. What job you might ask, many
of you get the impression I really enjoy being on stage for a couple of
hours with a bunch of strange uncontrollable trail runners. The home made
bread and personalized cakes from a couple of lovely ladies makes me feel
pretty lucky I can do this job. Yes, please put the WTRS down on your
racing calendar for 2010, but don’t forget my other races, SJT50K in three
weeks, my Shadow of the Giants 50K May 30 up in Fish Camp, come up run
with Rob McNair see him finish his 20th year at Shadow. We are
going to have a party, all night long! Who sang that song? Must mention
Saddleback Trail Marathon November 7, I know you all will be ready for
that. Please don’t forget to get your race entries in early our magic
sport is really growing and we only have 150 spots at Blue Jay Campground.
I know you would hate to miss out. Please use my email address for any
running questions, always happy to advise and help.
Whatever race you are doing, enjoy it, hug your fellow runner, not in the
race of course!
Much Love from BIG BAZ the RD XXXX

2007 Garmin GPS
data with Google Earth Views (2009 was 11.9 miles &
3,471' of climbs) |

Aerial View of the 21K Course |

Google Earth 3D view of the 21K terrain |

GPS record of the elevation changes. The Garmin sums all those
ups and downs. Tells us we climbed a TOTAL of over 1/2 of a mile
(3,470 feet)! The Garmin measured a distance of 12.68 miles,
whereas 21 kilometers = 13.05 miles mathematically. Almost
exactly a half marathon distance. |
|
21K Race Google Earth Flyby Tour
Double click on this link and wait for
Google Earth to zoom in from orbit to the view that shows the red
outline of the entire 21K course. Once it stabilizes, click on
PLAY TOUR button or select PLAY TOUR from the drop down TOOLS menu.
That starts the animated flyover of the entire course. Awesome!
The fabulous
Google earth views and flyby comes from uploading the Garmin GPS data
to
www.MotionBased.com.
This site does a separate analysis of the
elevation changes and came up with 4,214 feet of climbs! 80% of
a mile. |
