Winter Trail Run Series 15K Results - January 24, 2009 Morning Mates The story of the day must be the rain and why 120 runners wanted to meet in rain, run in rain and those who stood around for the brief awards and raffle thing were getting colder in rain. The hero of the day in some peoples eyes was me new mate big Sam Bosworth, the bare chested runner, he is swimming to Catalina today! My day started around 5 AM in Laguna Woods where the rain was really heavy, picked up the ice and drove the old motor home South to meet my girl Sandy in SJC. She doesn’t like the drive up the new Ortega Hwy and hubby Bill has been sick the last week. Opened up Blue Jay, and me mate Virgil arrived in his FS work vehicle and asked if I thought runners would turn up. Oh ye, I said, only fires keep them away. My mate Bob drove up from his home in Fallbrook to help out, in his half open Jeep of course… he had to leave caus his back seat was collecting water. What a good mate! Must admit a few pre-entered runners failed to attend, but the same day entrants made up the numbers and some more old faces graced us with their presence. We are lucky. It was magic, no one complained we were running the same course as the 12k and my drinker mate was the winner of the most improved… by 30 plus minutes no less. I think most bettered their times in conditions that were questionable to say the less. Dean Dobberteen, my good mate wasted no time in taking the lead and felt good all the way to the finish line. Unfortunately he didn’t break Jon Clarks time, but was real close. My animal keeper friend, Ben Hian, pointed out Dean didn’t beat his time either… bit of rivalry I see!! Mike Sellers enjoyed his day in the rain to come second and Dave Brobeck was all smiles finishing third overall. Must mention 45 year-old Fred Cowles still has his speed that used to win him races in years past, hope he comes back. Adam Van Bercklelaer bettered his time by 4 minutes and jumped 2 places overall, his dad would be proud. You will notice some ages were missing in the results… please help me fill them in caus it held back my age group awards, both races now. These will be dished out next time if that is OK. 25 year-old Brian McDermott got his age group award and beat his Pop at the same time. Thanks Bill. As for our lovely lady winners, even with the rain and the mud they all looked magic to me. 44 year-old Lisa O’Leary returned and repeated her first place finish and bettered her time by a few seconds. Local mum Shannon Waegner improved her position by one to come in second and my sweetheart Michelle Barton took third female. She placed first female and third overall one week earlier, but that was at the Avalon 50 mile trail race on Catalina Island! Must mention Judy Maguire - she was close to her younger runner ladies. All in all you did good and the end result was we had another magic day in Blue Jay. Virgil and his mates really helped me in time of need with directing traffic, etc. We will not know if the rest of the campground will be clear for the 18k, but be assured I will let you know. Want to thank the many who help out, I gave lots of food and drink away to my old neighbors in LWs… they hope it rains on Feb 7. I am sure whatever the conditions, we will share another magic experience, even if runners do talk when I am trying my best to get out of the rain. Those nice people who disobey the dog rule, please leave your mutts at home and then for sure there are no accidents. Oh yes we have had them. As for the one kid who asked me for a light for his cigarette, my kind words to him got through… that was a first! Don’t forget those running 2 races do get a lovely WTRS shirt and for those finishing all four of the series… you will like! TTFN for now, be good to each other. Love Big BAZ
