Winter Trail Run Series 21K - March 8, 2008G’Day to one and all. How time flies when you’re having fun, especially our little crowd of trail runners that have gathered at Blue Jay Campground over the last couple of months. We had the biggest turn out of the 4 races, more new trails runners turned up, I feel a little sorry for the ones who decided to miss a magic day. The weather again proved to be cooperating, that is done by magic for sure. I’ve never hugged so many sweaty bodies at the finish line, most of them smiling of course. I said it was tough and for the ones who had never been on Horse Thief I know my name had turned to something else…. I will not mention those names. The aid station run by Kirk and Son worked out fine, just a gallon of agua came back. They did get help from a runner who had a leg problem, but offered to help out on the day. We have some good people at our events. I am a little sorry for those runners who didn’t run all 4 races, but paid and were expecting a sweat-shirt. The rules were made by committee a long time ago and I must abide by them to please the runners who did turn up to run all the WTRS. The hooded sweats turned out to be popular bonus along with our race-shirts. I must thank all the volunteers that helped out over the series, it just wouldn’t happen without their support. Lucky for us we are in a sport that wants to support their fellow runners. Our forest service friends were happy to host the events, but we will loose Virgil in May, retiring to become a golfer! Lets hope the new guy can play along with us. Must thank Fleet Feet and E-Gel for there giveaways for the raffles, I think everyone got something. My new mate Kevin did wonders by supplying our morning Starbucks Coffee and the prizes, he enjoyed picking up his sweat shirt. I think the little food tray worked out and the drinks of course, wasn’t much beer left for me to take home, that will change! As for the Race. yes everyone enjoyed the course although the fallen tree at the end caused problems for a few, especially after running the tough 13 miles. Hey I will get it removed before 09. Christan Haymes didn’t have a problem after he had taken the lead, although there was some stiff competition in the lead pack. His finish time proves he probably ran all of Horse Thief Trail, some feet! Newbie, Antonio Devalos was second, two and a half minutes back with local boy Steve Lind just four seconds behind to take overall third. The top ten all beat two hours including the first women. Smiling Lisa O’Leary was more than happy to win and place tenth overall, the 43 year old was not worried about the younger guys, just maybe Michelle Barton, who came in twelfth overall and four and a half minutes behind Lisa, she loves the down hills. Sue Zihlmann at 44 can still run the trails hard, coming in just seconds behind lovely Miss M. All the award winners deserve their awards. Jim Heller loves his age group wins, as does Jeff Wong and Steve Merrilees and young Greg Sweet, they’re all tough guys. Shannon, Keira, Judy and Julie will be back next year hopefully. Of course not everyone wins but from all the nice comments from runners we seem to all enjoy the magic trails and the fun. It may show, I have a good time too; it’s a bit of a let down waking up on Sunday morning to find I have to make my own coffee! This years WTRS was the best, we doubled our numbers from 07. We’re reaching our limit with entrants, so next year please send in your entries early, but I do understand those first timers turning up on race day. We hope to attract more. I will get times and dates out later this year for 09, those on the current list will be notified my email. If you wish to offer ideas for other trail events in the area please contact me. Don’t forget the Old Goats 50 miler & 50K coming up on April 12th. I do need volunteers to help at aid stations if you’re available, or maybe you’re ready to try an ultra!
Again thanks for your
support and with luck we can do it all again next year, same time same
place. I will try to get some execution lessons, you are a tough crowd to
control, but I still love ye. Stay in touch and keep smiling.
